Shade

Shade is an attempt to explore the meaning that makeup and beauty have in the lives of women. It aims to seek out women’s motivations and ideas in relationship with the self and ideas of beauty in their daily lives. Our ideas of Self are closely linked with how people see us and how we want them to see us. Beauty as a concept that has been idealized and put up on a pedestal with many implications in this idea of self. Society’s parameters and rules of beauty are taught and inculcated constantly in many subtle ways. The film explores the conflicts that women face on a daily basis as they navigate their complicated relationship with makeup and beauty and the different positions different women take on it. Makeup and other beauty and grooming related procedures have an important role to play in the lives of girls as they are growing up. It also has an effect on how women grow up to view each other along with themselves.
